POUL DUE JENSEN FOUNDATION ACTIVE OWNERSHIP The 20,000 EUR donation from the Poul Due Jensen Social Responsibility Award was given to the Rotary Club in order to further develop this course and its reach. Another important aspect of the initiative is that it addresses several of the UN Global Goals directly with regards to quality education, economic growth and decent jobs, but indirectly also building the knowledge and skills needed to increase water and energy resource efficiency in the vast country. Furthermore, the training centre in Chennai is trying to attract young women to the plumbing school, a trade which is traditionally very male-dominated, thus also improving women’s possibilities for increased equality and economic independence. A model to consider in other countries? At the Poul Due Jensen Foundation, the hope is that this CSR project could become an inspiration to Grundfos companies in other countries where there is a lack of trained plumbers and similar demographic challenges. Reaching out to rural students According to Skilling India, close to 66 per cent of plumbers in trade are not fit enough to handle real world challenges. With the rapid growth in urbanisation and industry, this challenge is only bound to grow. Grundfos India has pledged to support the Vocational Excellence Centre’s teaching staff and running costs for educating 80 plumbers per year over three years (2018-2020). The Centre will use the 20,000 EUR from the Poul Due Jensen Foundation to offer internationally certified one-month intensive plumbing & pump repair courses to 125 live-in students over the next year and to equip 300 students with a plumb ing kit after graduation. – The rural students are generally more motivated to come to the city and study, but they often don’t have the resources. With the prize money, Rotary can bridge this gap, explains Mahathi Parashuram, Regional Head of Public Affairs, Communications & Engagement in Grundfos Asia-Pacific, based in Chennai A small part of the Foundation grant will also be spent on awareness programs and attraction of local students. – First and foremost, the initiative creates lasting change for young people and their families who benefit from a stable income and a brighter future. Furthermore, there is a huge need for skilled people to ensure water supply and water treatment now and in the future. Finally, this also indirectly supports Grundfos’ business and the 2025 strategy through providing better access to skilled employees for the supplier and service partner networks, says Kim Nøhr Skibsted, Executive Director. The Foundation will therefore investigate how it can support such new initiatives through its philanthropic activities.
