We must translate challenges into opportunities While autumn is approaching in the northern hemisphere, marking the end of a first half-year which has in many ways been eventful; the pump business does, after all, have reason to be happy. The first half of 2013 offered more challenges than we originally expected when preparing the budgets for the year. This is true, not only for Grundfos – the entire pump business is treading water, waiting for the markets to improve. At the beginning of the second half-year, we received positive feedback from our most important markets. Much of it was due to improved market conditions, yet the major reason for improved sales was due to our team of committed sales representatives who continue to land new orders every day. We are beginning to reap the benefits of Project Boomerang, which is quite simply about doing more of what we do best. We need to spend more time with the customers, and we must create added sales using simple means. And we must not be afraid of challenging the conventions. It is precisely in a situation like this that our global presence once again proves to be one of our strong points. Common to our wide range of products are the well-known Grundfos characteristics – quality, price, sustainability, reliability and efficiency. For generations, these characteristics have helped secure our international position and characteristics that continue to open new doors in new markets. The interesting thing is that it is not always the same parameters that are decisive for selling. In some markets, price alone will be decisive, while in others, efficiency or reliability are the most important ones. Therefore, it is important that we are fully equipped to embrace the various customer requirements. This demands local presence and very good relations with our customers. Yet, improved sales are not the only answer. We continue to focus on costs and production in general. Over the past few months, Group management has taken a very close look at how we can ensure that Grundfos will be able to meet future challenges and a growing global market. This work is far from over. It has already led to a range of necessary adjustments. Here, the challenge remains the fact that our markets are changing much more quickly than has been the case so far. We are ready to meet this challenge, and I am convinced that 2013 will be yet another good year for Grundfos.
