T he inhabitants of Copenhagen have gotten a new landmark. It is called BLOX, and it is a building, which in many ways is in front. It is located right on the water front, and it is also leading the way in terms of architectural edge. It is located between the city centre and the harbour, only one kilometre away from the central railway station. “Instead of building on new ground, we have tried to regain a lost area in Copenhagen. The location is unique, but not much was happening. Now we are trying to change this through urban development,” explains Project Manager Peter Fangel Poulsen from Realdania By & Byg. Triple bottom line The project was shaped more than ten years ago, when Realdania bought the exclusive building site. It is the Dutch owned architecture company OMA that has outlined the project, and from day one Peter Fangel Poulsen has been driving the process. He explains that the economic, social and environmental sustainability are almost equal, and therefore it has sometimes been difficult to find the right balance when making decisions about design.
