DSAOFNEAWTIAOTNERS 4253 that the village can’t consume all of it. On top of a 6m tower sits a 20 m3 elastic tank serving 1,500 people. During the rainy season, they only turn on the pump every 3-5 days. This means water is standing still for days in the pipes and the tank, and the risk of bacteria growth increases significantly. There are several ways of dealing with the issue. We don’t think the system should be replaced, the piping could be extended to add tap stands in the neighbouring villages and give many more people access to safe water. BØRNEfonden works in five West African countries (Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin, Mali and Cape Verde) and there are about 20 development units in each country. Each development unit employs around four- six staff members, and the unit is run by an unpaid committee of 10-12 members, who are all elected democratically by the local community. “What we really appreciate about BØRNEfonden is their long-term commitment to the communities and their holistic approach. The experience from this project has shown us that we have a good starting point for a fertile longterm partnership,” says the Foundation’s Executive Director, Christian Hartvig. BØRNEfonden’s key intervention areas are education, health, income generating activities and children, youth and development. BØRNEfonden stays committed to a community for a period of 15-20 years, after which all facilities will be handed over to the local authorities and citizens of the local community. The safe water projects supported by the Foundation fit nicely into BØRNEfonden’s work in the area of health.
