Grundfos Olympics 2019: Three Decades of Team Building andFriendship The Grundfos Olympics was first incorporated in 1989 at the corporate HQ in Bjerringbro, Denmark. The inaugural edition saw close to 600 employees take part in a series of sporting activities aimed at improving their teamwork. Fast forward to 2019, and the Grundfos Olympics is still in full swing. Held every four years, this year’s event marks the 30th anniversary of the Grundfos Olympics with over 1300 participants coming in from all over the globe, the size may have increased twice-fold, but the spirit of the games still remains the same. The Grundfos Olympics was incorporated to bring together the diverse workforce of Grundfos under the banner of ‘Teambuilding and Friendship’. The primary goal of this company-wide event is to allow employees of different cultural backgrounds to get to know each other far better than what they could over emails or any other official line of communication and enable them to share an experience together. The Olympics is more than just a large-scale team building activity. It’s also a great platform for showcasing one’s own culture. They say that the best way to travel is through food and drink and on that note, the Olympic Village showcased the food and beverages from the various participating countries. But more than some new dishes, the Grundfos Olympics offers something far more unique; an Experience. For some employees, it might have been their first time travelling abroad to another country, for others it might be an occasion to look back and reflect on their long career at Grundfos and reunite with old colleagues. This year, 17 employees from Grundfos India participated in the Olympics and Arpitha Shivappa, Senior Executive of 1Office (Sales Support-FO) and Amit Sahu Bhagwandas Sahu, Manager of Sales won silver in women’s double badminton and bronze in men’s double badminton respectively. From teams representing their respective nations to multi-cultural mixed teams, the event allowed employees to share an experience together. While not every team won a medal in a particular sport, everyone participating was definitely a winner in terms of teamwork, creating a more inclusive work-environment and keeping the spirit of Grundfos alive. Though the Olympics is focused towards Grundfos’ employees, the sustainability approach is also present. In 2011, as a symbol of sustainability, Grundfos decided to plant trees in the formation of the Olympic rings. This year the third of the five Olympic rings was established. The ring of trees represents the donation offered to the local communities. The tradition is an example of how Grundfos strives to establish forests in areas where the groundwater will be protected to ensure clean drinking water in the future.
