PREFACE In modern wastewater treatment, mixing is a very essential part of the operation and mixing equipment is involved in many aspects of the treatment process. This involves the mixing of media with different characteristics and mixing in tanks of very different sizes and shapes. Sometimes the mixing equipment is installed in process tanks with carrier media or in tanks equipped with aeration equipment or other pre- conditions that require special attention. A correct selection and positioning of the mixing equipment is very important and this handbook has been developed with the specific focus on mixing related to wastewater treatment plants. However, the fundamental parameters in mixing and the general positioning rules will apply for other applications as well. Correct installation of mixing equipment in process tanks at wastewater treatment plants ensures the full utilisation of the entire tank volume as well as fast mixing of different flow streams entering the tank. More- over it allows biological and chemical processes to take place independently of aeration. This is especially important for wastewater treatment plants which have to meet requirements for nutrients removal. Correct selection and positioning of the equipment is essential to ensure optimal mixing and minimum energy consumption. At the same time correct selection will lead to lower wear and tear, and hereby reduce the operating costs of the equipment. With this handbook, Grundfos intends to help designers of waste-water treatment plants with guidelines and positioning rules. The handbook also describes the basic principles in mixing using submerged mixing equipment. We hope that the handbook will give inspiration as well as guidance in your daily job.
