Grundfos India Brings Water to the Melbhimandapalli Village The Melbhimandapalli village in the Krishnagiri District, Tamil Nadu has around 200 families and most of them are from lower castes. This village used to manage with the water supply that they received once in three days for 3 to 4 hours. The water supply was muddy and polluted and came through a damaged piping system from the Hogenakkal catchment area. A borewell that was dug by the government three years ago was dry until recently, when good drinking water was collected at 150 to 200 feet depth. The borewell was connected to an overhead tank of 30,000 litres capacity. The electric motor became non-functional during the initial months and was removed. Repeated appeals to the panchayat leaders or even staging a dharna in front of the Hogenakkal water supply office did not provide the community any relief from the government. The summer months (3 to 4 months) were the most difficult for the villagers, with the water release sometimes restricted to once in 10 days. The people barely survived walking more than 1 or 2 km outside their village to fetch water from the borewells in agricultural land. Grundfos India in collaboration with Aid India, an NGO that works with the most underprivileged villages to improve quality of life, helped provide a sustainable solution for Melbhimandapalli. The solution came in the form of an eco-friendly solar water pump that is easy to operate, has no fuel costs and above all ensures consistent water supply, throughout the year. On May 4, 2018 the grateful village panchayat and Aid India organised an inaugural event to celebrate the installation of the solar pump. Mahathi Parashuram, Regional Head of Public Affairs, Communications & Relations, Grundfos Asia Pacific Region, attended the event, along with local government officials and over 150 village residents. To thank Grundfos India, children from the local school put up a cultural show with performances and activities to spread awareness about water conservation.
